A steep escarpment edge, deep gorges and distinct knickzones in river profiles characterize the landscape on the Western Escarpment of the Andes between ~5°S and ~18°S (northern Peru to northern Chile). Strong north–south and east–west precipitation gradients are exploited in order to determine how climate affects denudation rates in three river basins spanning an otherwise relatively uniform geologic and geomorphologic setting. Late Miocene tectonics uplifted the Meseta/Altiplano plateau (~3000 m a.s.l.), which is underlain by a series of Tertiary volcanic‐volcanoclastic rocks. Streams on this plateau remain graded to the Late Miocene base level. Below the rim of the Meseta, streams have responded to this ramp uplift by incising deeply into fractured Mesozoic rocks via a series of steep, headward retreating knickzones that grade to the present‐day base level defined by the Pacific Ocean. It is found that the Tertiary units on the plateau function as cap‐rocks, which aid in the parallel retreat of the sharp escarpment edge and upper knickzone tips. 10Be‐derived catchment denudation rates of the Rio Piura (5°S), Rio Pisco (13°S) and Rio Lluta (18°S) average ~10 mm ky?1 on the Meseta/Altiplano, irrespective of precipitation rates; whereas, downstream of the escarpment edge, denudation rates range from 10 mm ky?1 to 250 mm ky?1 and correlate positively with precipitation rates, but show no strong correlation with hillslope angles or channel steepness. These relationships are explained by the presence of a cap‐rock and climate‐driven fluvial incision that steepens hillslopes to near‐threshold conditions. Since escarpment retreat and the precipitation pattern were established at least in the Miocene, it is speculated that the present‐day distribution of morphology and denudation rates has probably remained largely unchanged during the past several millions of years as the knickzones have propagated headward into the plateau. Measurements from recently installed 5 MHz high-frequency radar (CODAR) stations south of Point Arena, California, are used to describe surface current patterns during the upwelling season (June-August 2007). The systems provide hourly current maps on a 5-km grid, covering a region from approximately 10 to 150 km offshore (the continental shelf into the deep ocean). These HF-radar observations provide an unprecedented view of circulation in this “coastal transition zone”, between the wind-driven circulation over the shelf and the California Current circulation offshore. Circulation patterns include: (1) bifurcation of the coastal upwelling jet downstream of Point Arena into an along-shelf (down-coast) branch and an offshore branch, and (2) a large-scale anticyclonic meander that often develops into an eddy-like recirculation south of the bifurcation. The “recirculation” feature extends well offshore, with surface currents 50-100 km from the coast consistently opposing the wind stress. The spatial and temporal evolution of the surface current features during upwelling events affects surface transport from Point Arena to areas in the south, increasing the travel time of a substantial fraction of newly upwelled water from a few days to roughly two weeks. Thus, surface currents even far offshore influence coastal transport of nutrients, phytoplankton and larvae on ecologically relevant timescales, with resultant connectivity patterns very different than implied by a simple examination of the mean flow. 相似文献

Phytoplankton biomass and primary production were monitored in the Hauraki Gulf and on the northeastern continental shelf, New Zealand - using ship surveys, moored instruments and satellite observations (1998-2001) - capturing variability across a range of space and time scales. A depth-integrated primary production model (DIM) was used to predict integrated productivity from surface parameters, enabling regional-specific estimates from satellite data. The shelf site was dominated by pico-phytoplankton, with low chlorophyll-a (<1 mg m−3) and annual production (136 g C m−2 yr−1). In contrast, the gulf contained a micro/nano-phytoplankton-dominated community, with relatively high chlorophyll-a (>1 mg m−3) and annual production (178 g C m−2 yr−1). Biomass and productivity responded to physico-chemical factors; a combination of light, critical mixing depths and/or nutrient limitation—particularly new nitrate-N. Relatively low biomass and production was observed during 1999. This coincided with inter-annual variability in the timing and extent of upwelling- and downwelling-favourable along-shelf wind-stress, influencing the fluxes of new nitrate-N to the shelf and gulf. Relationships with the Southern Oscillation Index are also discussed. Our multi-scaled sampling highlighted details associated with stratification and de-stratification events, and deep sub-surface chlorophyll-a not visible to satellite sensors. This study demonstrates the importance of multi-scaled sampling in gaining estimates of regional production and its responses to physico-chemical forcing. 相似文献

Main channel habitats of the Ohio, Missouri, and Upper Mississippi Rivers were surveyed during the summers of 2004, 2005 and
2006 using a probability-based sampling design to characterize inter-annual and inter-river variation in suspended chlorophyll
a (CHLa) and related variables. Large (fivefold) differences in CHLa were observed with highest concentrations in the Upper
Mississippi (32.3 ± 1.8 μg L−1), intermediate values in the Missouri (19.7 ± 1.1 μg L−1) and lowest concentrations in the Ohio (6.8 ± 0.5 μg L−1). Inter-annual variation was small in comparison to inter-river differences suggesting that basin-specific factors exert
greater control over river-wide CHLa than regional-scale processes influencing climate and discharge. The rivers were characterized
by variable but generally low light conditions as indicated by depth-averaged underwater irradiance <4 E m−2 day−1 and high ratios of channel depth to euphotic depth (>3). Despite poor light conditions, regression analyses revealed that
TP was the best single predictor of CHLa (R
2 = 0.40), though models incorporating both light and TP performed better (R
2 = 0.60). Light and nutrient conditions varied widely within rivers and were inversely related, suggesting that riverine phytoplankton
may experience shifts in resource limitation during transport. Inferred grazing and sedimentation losses were large yet CHLa
concentrations did not decline downriver indicating that growth and loss processes were closely coupled. The contribution
by algae to suspended particulate organic matter in these rivers (mean = 41%) was similar to that of lakes (39%) but lower

This paper compares three kinds of shocks and sheaths; the bow shock and magnetosheaths of planets, interplanetary coronal mass ejection (ICME) shocks and sheaths, and the termination shock and heliosheath. We compare the energy balance across these shocks, fluctuations in the sheaths, asymmetries, and shock evolution. All three shocks and sheaths display asymmetries imposed by outside magnetic fields. Energy balance is often achieved through reflection of ions of the shocks, but in some cases no reflected ions are observed. The shocks may have similar small scale fluctuations which drive density changes in the sheaths. 相似文献

This is the first part of a study on the seismic response of the L’Aquila city using 2D simulation and experimental data.
We have studied two velocity-depth models with the aim of outlining the behavior of a velocity reversal in the top layer,
which is associated with the stiff Brecce de L’Aquila unit (BrA). In this setting, the SMTH model is topped by a layer with
about 2:1 impedance contrast with the underlying layer while the NORV model has no velocity reversal. We have simulated the
propagation of SH and P-SV wavefields in the range 0–10 Hz for incidence 0°–90°. Earthquake spectral ratios of the horizontal
and vertical components at six sites in L’Aquila downtown are compared to corresponding synthetics spectral ratios. The vertical
component of P-SV synthetics enables us to investigate a remarkable amplification effect seen in the vertical component of
the recorded strong motion. Sites AQ04 and AQ05 are best matched by synthetics from the NORV model while FAQ5 and AQ06 have
a better match with synthetics spectral ratios from the SMTH model. All simulations show this behavior systematically, with
horizontal and near-horizontal incident waves predicting the overall pattern of matches more clearly than vertical and near-vertical
incidence. The model inferences are in agreement with new geological data reporting lateral passages in the top layer from
the stiff BrA to softer sediments. Matches are good in terms of frequency of the first amplification peak and of spectral
amplitude: the horizontal components have spectral ratio peaks predominantly at 0.5 Hz in the simulations and at 0.7 Hz in
the data, both with amplitudes of 4, while the vertical component spectral ratios reach values of 6 at frequencies of about
1 Hz in both data and simulations. The vertical component spectral ratios are very well matched using Rayleigh waves with
incidence at 90°. The NORV model without the velocity reversal predicts spectral ratio peaks for the horizontal components
at frequencies up to 6 Hz. The reversal of velocity acts as a low-pass frequency filter on the horizontal components reducing
the amplification effect of the sediment filled valley. 相似文献

We present a statistical methodology which aims to monitor and assess the progress of unexploded ordnance remediation. We
explicitly quantify the probability that each buried sensor-identified anomaly is not a target of interest conditional on
the information gleaned from anomalies which have been dug and identified. We provide a measure of confidence that the anomalies
which remain onsite after remediation are not unexploded ordnance—this measure of confidence is gleaned through Monte Carlo
methods. The methodology is iterative in that, at any point in the remediation process, we can assess remediation progress

An innovative methodology for dual-polarized Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data segmentation is proposed. The methodology is based on the thresholding of the 1D-histograms of the two images produced by the dual polarimetric bands. Thresholding of the histograms is performed using a nonparametric algorithm. Histograms after thresholding are combined together in a two dimensional histogram-based space in order to define sub-spaces, which are used for image segmentation. Sub-spaces are further divided based on two criteria which lead to a multi-level segmentation approach. Tomographic 4D reconstructions of ionospheric anomalies appearing in the high-latitude polar cap region are compared with
plasma density measurements by digital ionosonde located near the north magnetic pole at Eureka station and with in situ plasma
measurements on-board DMSP spacecraft. The moderate magnetic storm of 14–17 October 2002 is taken as an example of a geomagnetic
disturbance which generates large-scale ionospheric plasma anomalies at mid-latitudes and in the polar cap region. Comparison
of the GPS tomographic reconstructions over Eureka station with the ionosonde measurements of the F layer peak densities indicates
that the GPS tomography correctly predicts the time of arrival and passage of the ionospheric tongue of ionization over the
magnetic pole area, although the tomographic technique appears to under-estimate the value of F peak plasma density. Comparison
with the in situ plasma measurements by the DMSP SSIES instruments shows that the GPS tomography correctly reproduces the
large-scale spatial structure of ionospheric anomalies over a wide range of latitudes from mid-latitudes to the high-latitude
polar cap region, though the tomographic reconstructions tend to over-estimate the density of the topside ionosphere at 840 km
DMSP orbit. This study is essential for understanding the quality and limitations of the tomographic reconstruction techniques,
particularly in high-latitude regions where GPS TEC measurements and other ionospheric data sources are limited. 相似文献

Regional changes in California surface temperatures over the last 80 years are analyzed using station data from the US Historical Climate Network and the National Weather Service Cooperative Network. Statistical analyses using annual and seasonal temperature data over the last 80 years show distinctly different spatial and temporal patterns in trends of maximum temperature (Tmax) compared to trends of minimum temperature (Tmin). For trends computed between 1918 and 2006, the rate of warming in Tmin is greater than that of Tmax. Trends computed since 1970 show an amplified warming rate compared to trends computed from 1918, and the rate of warming is comparable between Tmin and Tmax. This is especially true in the southern deserts, where warming trends during spring (March?CMay) are exceptionally large. While observations show coherent statewide positive trends in Tmin, trends in Tmax vary on finer spatial and temporal scales. Accompanying the observed statewide warming from 1970 to 2006, regional cooling trends in Tmax are observed during winter and summer. These signatures of regional temperature change suggest that a collection of different forcing mechanisms or feedback processes must be present to produce these responses. 相似文献
